Bedroom Makeover: Attack the Closet

Hi there! I have for you today the first super official post in the bedroom makeover series where I'm actually making something over, in this case, my closet. I'm so lucky to have a walk-in closet and I really stuff it to the brim. Below are a few photos of it before I cleaned it and reorganised it.

You can probably tell that it's very, very full. I hadn't separated my fall/winter and spring/summer clothes, so it was pretty much all the clothes that I owned that I would wear out (except for pants and other jackets) stuffed into one tiny closet.

I also had a bunch of stuff from my childhood and blankets and bags just thrown up on the top shelves and it was not organised in the least.

My clothes were also really crowded and as you can see, I couldn't even find some room to stuff them all in properly. Or maybe I was just too lazy. Oops.

There's also a stack of clothes underneath on the floor that just didn't have a home. Clearly, my canvas and mirror didn't have one either.

Now, it looks quite a bit better, don't you think?

It's not 100% done yet because there are still a handful of things (like the canvases) that I want to store elsewhere, but it's mostly finished and I'm so happy with how it looks. Everything is still pretty much where it was, just so much more organised.

Keep reading to see how my closet turned out!

One of a Kind Finds: February + Makeover!

Hi there! As you could probably tell from the title, there will be a few changes coming to this series. It was more of a wishlist-type post of rather expensive pieces that wasn't exactly reasonable, so I decided to incorporate a bit more of me into the series. If you've seen yesterday's post, you might've noticed that all the items I picked out (or most of them) were on sale and to be honest, that's how I shop. I only have about a handful of things in my closet that I actually got at full price. Maybe you think it's cheap, but I just think it's more fun to shop that way and you never know what hidden treasures you'll find browsing the sales section.

Now, I know that sizes can get limited in the sales section, so I'm doing my best to make sure that the majority of sizes are available for whichever item I picked out. Enough rambling, let's get into this new and improved list!

Warby Parker: The Brand That Made Me Fall Back in Love With Glasses

Hi there! I have a special post today for you guys and it's one about a brand I'd found out about recently called Warby Parker and their mission statement was what really caught my eye (see what I did there). For every pair of glasses that you buy from them, they will be giving one pair of glasses to someone in need. I've had bad vision for about as long as I can remember (I started wearing glasses in second grade) and it has gotten progressively worse over the years, so I can't imagine what I'd do without either my glasses or my contacts. That's why it's such a great thing that they're doing, giving those less fortunate the luxury that we take for granted.

I was approached by the brand and they introduced me to what they're all about and kindly asked if I'd be interested in writing about it (this is not sponsored in any way, just so you know). After checking them out, I agreed and picked three frames from their new (really awesome) Spring collection and create outfits around them that will hopefully spark a bit of inspiration for you.

Sunday Funday: February 23/14

Hi there! I hope that you’re all having a lovely Sunday morning, or whenever else you’re reading this. I don’t know about you, but reading and just relaxing on a Sunday morning to myself is my absolute favourite. Of course, that didn’t exactly happen this week due to the craziness of the Olympics and more specifically, the men’s gold medal hockey game. Basically, the family was up by 6:45. It was pretty exciting.

This whole week has been really awesome, actually, but also really busy, too. It wouldn’t have been so busy if I wasn’t up way too late watching the Olympics, but whatever, it happens once every four years, so I didn’t feel too bad. I’ve never been this excited about the Games before, but I can’t wait until next year. Well, technically, I can’t wait until the Games four years from now, but you know what I mean.

Countdown to Confidence: 9 Ways to Take Good Care of Your Body

Hi there! I was never that girl who was super into healthy eating, working out, and simply being good to my body… until now. I didn’t grow up in a household that promoted that very much. It wasn’t a big thing for my parents because growing up, getting enough food to eat was already an accomplishment, so that didn’t leave much room for being picky, which is unfortunately the downside of trying to lead a healthier lifestyle – it can get expensive.

I got into working out multiple times last year starting in February, but they were really short bursts of enthusiasm that got interrupted by big life things, making it extremely hard to continue. Just before school started again after my big trip to Vietnam, I made an effort to eat much healthier and work out. I don’t do any sports and only swam and skated growing up, so I wasn’t a very active child. I actually enjoy swimming quite a bit, but never continued with it.

After making that change in my life, I noticed that I became a lot happier and felt a lot better about myself. I know that saying that I “started eating healthier” and “started working out” are probably so vague and not helpful, so allow me to elaborate.

Before I begin, just a little disclaimer: I am in no way an expert and am not trying to say that you have to do this and this to be healthy or trying to be pretentious and say that I’m super healthy because I’m not. I try really hard and these are simply tips I’ve found helpful on my journey.

Style Diary: Good Luck Canada!

Hi there! It's kind of crazy to think the end of February is just one week away, but you're probably tired of hearing about others' disbelief at the end of every month, so I won't elaborate. But I can't resist, two months of 12 are almost done!

One thing I do have to mention, however, is that it's finally getting warmer here! There are two ways to look at this: a) there's slush outside and it's wet and icky or b) spring is almost here! I chose to think positive so I just can't wait to start wearing spring clothes again!

Words: The Freedom We Take for Granted

Hi there! I’ve put off this post for a while now. I kept getting the itch to write this, but I never got around to it because I didn’t feel like I’ve figured out the right way to say what I needed to say, but I think I’ve finally figured it out.

I’ve been reading a lot more lately, interviews, books, and it has gotten me to really think about words. I can’t decide if it was inevitable or not because though we all read the words on the page, I don’t know if we register what it means and its impact. We talk everyday and use words to communicate. Most of us probably write emails or papers, or something of a sort daily, and we absentmindedly read everything from billboards to newspaper headings on a daily basis. No matter how you cut it, words are all around us and very much a part of our lives.

Sunday Funday: Monday Edition: February 17/14

Hi there! I hope that you’ve all had a lovely Valentine’s Day with your loved ones and that you spent the day spreading some love. Or if you spent the day eating the chocolate others gave you, that’s okay, too.

This post was written yesterday on a roadtrip, but I didn't succeed to get decent Wi-fi to publish it in time, so here it is a day late, unfortunately!

Introduction to: Bedroom Makeover Series

Hi there! First of all... happy Valentine's Day! I hope that you're all going to spending the day with a loved one pigging out on chocolate and just having a blast. Now onto the post!

I been getting the itch to redecorate my room lately, especially after watching Elle Fowler’s videos and reading her posts all about it. I’ve wanted to do this since about two years ago, but never got around to it because of how expensive it is and how my parents weren’t cool with the idea, even if I was the one paying. Also, I just wanted to put it out there that I'm incredibly grateful for the room that I do have, but I'd like to make it my own a bit more by doing DIY projects and making small purchases as opposed to being a brat and asking my parents for a whole new room.

But after following Elle’s series, I realised that yes, she did buy a lot of things because she’s pretty well off, but she also made some small changes or has things laid out and organised in a smart and effective way that uses the space to her advantage. It inspired me so much that I figured that I’d start my own little series here as well because everyone’s journey will be different, so maybe I’ll be able to inspire one person out there to revamp their room a bit. Keep reading for a sneak peek of the huge project!

Hi there! If you're celebrating Valentine's Day tomorrow with your girlfriends, maybe you want to treat them to a little something because you know, they've been so awesome and supportive and stuff. If you need any ideas and have a bit of money to spend, keep reading! But remember, if you're struggling to find a gift and just can't seem to find any inspiration, chocolate is an absolutely wonderful, wonderful gift because I've only met one girl so far in my life who doesn't like chocolate.

5 Pathetic Single Girls Party Essentials

Hi there! Valentine’s Day is rapidly approaching and needless to say – or maybe I do need to say it – I am single. Obviously because most fourteen year old girls are. For once, I’ll actually be celebrating Valentine’s Day (kind of) with my girlfriends and we’re having a little something called a Pathetic Single Girls Party and it’s going to be awesome.

Just to clarify, we don’t think we’re pathetic because we’re single, but it’s something Taylor Swift came up with and we’re all pretty big fans, so we thought it’d be appropriate.

Sunday Funday: February 9/14

Stuck on the puzzle.
Image via We Heart It
Hi there! I've had a lovely week back from school and the start of my second semester of high school has been going pretty well. Hopefully, my classes don't get any more stressful because I like my sleep. I've gotten the chance to relax a lot this week, think clearly, go to the gym more regularly, and cook a lot.

I've always helped my parents a lot with dinner and all that and I've always found it really fun and relaxing, but I've never made the whole meal... until yesterday. Whether or not that is slightly pathetic is up to you to decide, but it made me very happy, especially considering how much us teenagers do to help around the house these days.

Cooking aside, there have been quite a few other things that have been making me happy this week. Keep reading to find out what they are!

Countdown to Confidence: 12 Ways to Get Rid of Acne

Fokis
Image via We Heart It
Hi there! This week’s Confidence post is all about your skin. Now, I know that your skin or your exterior in general should not be something you should base your level of confidence on, but it certainly helps when you can look in the mirror and say, “Wow, my skin actually looks great!” or a more modest response if you think that’s on the verge of being narcissistic.

I’ve had bad skin for the majority of my life, but lately, after taking good care of it, it’s gotten a lot better. Just as a bit of a disclaimer, I’m not a dermatologist or skin expert of any sort, but these are the things that I’ve found helpful to get rid of the majority of my acne.

Style Diary: Cozying Up

Hi there! Can you believe that it's already February? It's crazy. Apparently, the groundhog didn't see its shadow, so us Canadians are supposed to get our spring a bit early this year. (Knock on wood.) But let's be real here, Canadians are going to get another six weeks regardless of a stupid groundhog's shadow or lack thereof. Either way, it's still cold, so that's just no fun.

Current Love: Everything and Anything Pink

Hi there! I’ve always loved the colour pink. I don’t know, there’s just something so romantic, sweet, and girly about the colour that just gets me every time. I’ve been especially in love with it lately with the surge of pastel pink coats on the fashion scene. They’re just the most angelic thing and they just make me think of Paris. And macarons.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I thought it’d be appropriate to share with you my love for anything and everything that’s pink. Thick pink coats, delicate pink dresses, feminine pink heels… it’s just all so feminine, girly, and perfect. I’m kind of in love, haha.

Hopefully, this post full of lovely photos of pink fashion and other miscellaneous items will inspired your next outfit. Enjoy!

DIY: Heart Ear Cuff

easy wire diy heart ear cuff

Hi there! Since Valentine's Day is coming up, I decided that a Valentine's Day-themed DIY would be appropriate. I've done something similar before (a DIY heart ring, to be exact), so I thought I'd bring out the wire again and make a delicate little ear cuff. I love, love, love ear cuffs, except I never seem to be able to find the perfect one that also happens to be in my price range. Oh, and my parents probably wouldn't love the idea of me wearing one either.

I first got the idea to make this when I saw this photo on Pinterest, something that I've been getting into again. I thought it looked like such a cute little thing, so keep on reading if you'd like to know how to make it yourself! It's super easy and I'm so in love with it. See what I did there guys? Aha, yeah okay.

5 Things to Get Excited For: February

Hi there! Today, I’d like to introduce you to yet another new series that’s going to start here on Style Generis called “5 Things to Get Excited For” and is rather self-explanatory. It’s kind of like my take on the “What to Know for Monday” posts that I’ve seen in my feed every once in a while.

Most of the time when I’m not in a huge rush or something to get out the door in the morning, I’ll take a moment to make a mental list of things to be excited for before getting out of bed. It gives me a bit of motivation to get my day going and to start my day off in high spirits.

I haven’t had the chance to do this often enough lately because I have always been in a rush to get out of the house, but I think it’s really important to, you know, be happy, so I’m slowly trying to bring it back into my life and introduce it to you, as well.

Sunday Funday: February 2/14

Live Your Life
Image via We Heart It
Hi there! I am so unbelievably happy that it’s finally February! Even though January went by super quickly, it was such a hectic month that I am so, so glad is over. February’s going to feel like a pretty short one as well because it is only 28 days and it’s pretty crazy how quickly 2014 is already going by. But I guess that’s life. You just have to remember to stop and smell the roses, the wise advice I got from a wise English teacher a few years back.
